Mud Pump Selection for Horizontal Wells: Match Flow, Pressure, and Horsepower First

For most 5,000–7,000 ft horizontal wells, choose a 1,600-hp triplex mud pump with a 7,500-psi fluid end and a 6.5-in liner. This combination delivers 450–550 gpm at 3,500–4,500 psi, covering the 120–150 ft/hr ROP range typical of shale laterals while staying below the 90% continuous-duty pressure limit. OUSUN's F-1600 pump, manufactured as an OEM unit for Honghua and SINOPEC, meets this specification and is priced about 60% below comparable Western-brand pumps.

Start with flow rate, not pressure. A 6.5-in liner at 120 strokes per minute (spm) produces roughly 520 gpm; a 7-in liner produces about 610 gpm. For 5-in drill pipe and an 8.5-in hole, annular velocity should stay above 120 ft/min to lift cuttings, which requires at least 480 gpm. If your planned ROP exceeds 150 ft/hr, select the 7-in liner and accept a lower pressure rating of about 5,000 psi. OUSUN ships replacement liners and pistons in 15–30 days, so you can change liner size without a 12-week wait.

Pressure rating should be 1.5× your maximum anticipated pump pressure. For a 12,000-ft vertical well with 15-ppg mud, hydrostatic pressure alone is about 9,360 psi; you need a pump rated to at least 7,500 psi to handle friction and surge. The F-1600 fluid end is rated to 7,500 psi and tested to 11,250 psi (1.5×). Western-brand equivalents often cost $180,000–$220,000; OUSUN's F-1600 assembly typically lands at $70,000–$90,000, with 45–75 day delivery from order to port.

Horsepower selection: use 1 hp per 1 gpm at 1,500 psi as a rough rule, then add 20% margin. A 520-gpm pump at 4,500 psi requires 812 hydraulic horsepower; with 85% mechanical efficiency, that is 955 brake horsepower. A 1,300-hp pump is the minimum; 1,600 hp gives you room for pressure spikes and liner wear. OUSUN's F-1300 and F-1600 pumps share 80% of fluid-end parts, reducing spare-parts inventory by about 30% for fleets running both models.

Finally, verify API-7K certification and OEM traceability. OUSUN is API-7K certified and has supplied mud pumps to Honghua and SINOPEC for over a decade. Ask for the serial-numbered test record: pressure-hold at 1.5× rated pressure for 3 minutes, no leaks, and NDT on fluid-end welds. With 15–30 day consumable lead times and 45–75 day assembly lead times, you can plan a rig-up without holding $500,000 in safety stock.
